Law for the Public Interest A Key Tool in the Fight for Fairness, Equality, and Justice
The growing need for public interest law brought about the birth of our legal foundation, Advocates for Justice (A4J). Emerging from the work of community activists and the progressive legal community, A4J is a strong and loud voice in the fight for social justice. A4J provides pro bono or low cost advocacy and legal representation to protect the rights of the poor and under-represented working people, and supports community groups that support disadvantaged individuals as part of its mission to fight for socioeconomic justice and equality for all.
Founded by Arthur Z. Schwartz in 2011 as a public interest organization, A4J grew from his 30-year history as a civil rights lawyer whose work focused largely on protecting workers from employment discrimination a violations of free speech. A4J was created because of lack of public interest firms in the United States, and because of the overwhelming need for pro bono and low cost attorneys to provide passionate and effective representation to those in need.
